MUSEUM COLLECTIONS
Funds determine value of every museum. The first items were collected by S. Sivkova, E. Tsigankova and O. Osmak, workers of the Kaliningrad Regional Historical and Art Museum, before our museum was officially recognized. Nowadays the museum funds and research achieves contain more than 66 thousand units of issue. The museum collects shells, corals, amber, palaeontological samples, paintings, graphic works, sculptures, decorative and applied arts collections, things of everyday life and ethnography, numismatics, maps, philatelic, photo documents, equipment samples and memorable items.
Special attention is paid to collecting of materials concerning the SRV Vitiaz’s fortune, the main museum object. In November 2007 the Vitiaz acquired a status of “Monument of Science and Technology 1st Class”. The museum possesses original drafts of the ship from the “Schihau” shipyard (Germany) where it was built in our. This year the “CSRIoN” (Saint-Petersburg) passed to the museum a photo album with the Vitiaz’s interior rooms made in 1948 after the ship had been reequipped in Wismar (GDR). The museum funds contain materials connected with work of famous scientists and researches of the ocean, such as M. Klenova, V, Cort, P. Shirshov, V. Zenkovich, P. Bezrukov, I. Papanin and many others. Graphical works with historical ships by E. Voishvillo and boat models of scientific and historical ships by the best native boat model makers are the museum’s pride. Graphics by Voishvillo were successfully exhibited in Germany and boat models decorated the exposition of Russian pavilion during the “Expo-98” international exhibition in Lisbon. Items of a particular value are: scientific drawings of the Kuril-Kamchatka trench fish made in the 14th voyage by L. Ponomareva, Doctor of Biology; drawings of cetacean of the World ocean by B. Leonov, worker of AtlantNIRO, and drawings of deep-sea fish by I. Trunov, worker of the same organization and Candidate of Biology. Items of natural branch take a significant place in the funds. Biological collections are represented by rich collections of shells, corals, taxidermic sculptures of sea animals and wet mounts. The amber collection is based on 822 objects from German and Prussian collections (up to the XX century) and items got as a result of co-work with Marine Venture Enterprise of Experimental Underwater Amber Mining. Furniture from Admiral S. Makarov’s room, personal things and achieves of oceanologists including personal things of native astronauts, particularly things of A. Leonov, the first person in the outer space, are the most valuable exhibits. Important are the collections of “Coats of Arms of Russian Marine Families” graphical works and collection of tin soldiers in Russian marine uniform. The funds keep a collection of metal small form “Fish” sculptures by animal sculptor A. Martz. Particular attention should be paid to unique amber articles made by artists from the Tsarskoselskaya Amber Workshop and Kaliningrad craftsmen. In 2003 it was successfully exhibited in Armoury of the Kremlin at the “Russian Amber Gold” exhibition. The archeological object “Ship of the XIX Century” takes a special place. The museum had been preserving and assembling it during 7 years. Funds registers are computerized. In 2007 the “CAMIS” computer programme was implemented to register museum funds. | ||||||||
