The “Ship of the XIX century”

  I. Kant and Koenigsberg

The Baltic is the sea and the wind, the dune, pine-trees and amber, sails and ships… It is a wonderland. As great Kant wrote, here, on the Baltic “your soul is full of feelings, it is the highest degree of perfection”. For centuries ships and havens are built here, nautical science and professions are developed, fish is caught and amber is excavated, shores are preserved and people work and rest. The sea gives food and inspiration, but the sea also takes away…

The ship wrecked in the tough waves of the Baltic came back to life in order to tell not so much about the maritime past as about our maritime future. It is not only a unique finding of the Baltic, but the symbol of our maritime land with complicated history and fortune, a symbol of our aspiration to new shores. We are all abroad the one ship which is sailing in the sea of history. Our life depends on ship’s strength, captain’s courage, crew’s co-ordination and course. But the most important is that how… favorable the sea is.

The exposition is dedicated to the maritime history of Koenigsberg-Kaliningrad and reveals the following aspects: geographic location, the history of the port, internal shipping, ferries, shipbuilding, fishing industry, oil extraction in the Baltic, nautical science and education, Baltic resorts, Baltic sails, Kant about Koenigsberg.
The “Ship of the XIX Century”, found in the sandpit of the Yantar plant, is located in the centre, it symbolizes a link between the past and the present. Unique items, ship models and artistic works help to reveal a maritime essence of the old town with assured and firm future.
