Nowadays oceanography has acquired its modern vision which deeply comprehends the aspects of scientific research of sea and strives for revealing methods of rational usage of the World ocean which covers about 71% of our planet. As a part of hydrosphere the ocean interacts with atmosphere and the Earth crust which determine its features. The ocean is a big accumulator of sun heat and moisture. Owing to its existence rapid temperature changes smoothen, far-away dry areas are moisturized and favorable conditions for life development are created. The ocean is a rich source of food, chemical and mineral resources which are partially used by humankind. Since the ancient times the World ocean and its seas have been used for establishing links between peoples. It created prerequisites for the Great Discoveries and exploration of far-away territories. The role of the Ocean in human’s life is constantly growing.

Wide knowledge about the ocean, existence and significance of hydrological processes, chemical and physical water parameters, relief formation, species and functional structure of oceanic biocoenosis can not be presented in one exposition that is why we called the exposition “The World of the Ocean. A Touch…”.

The exposition of the main building consists of several complexes. Palaeontological collection from the museum funds will reveal the world of far geological epochs and history of archebiosis in the ocean. The “Pearls of the Sea” collection of shells magnifies by astonishing forms and colour variety. Today the museum possesses more than 6 thousand of shells and about 900 shells are exhibited. The “Coral Gardens” collection makes possible to “visit” the real coral reef, about 300 samples are exhibited. But the most amazing thing is that fish and other dwellers of the World ocean live in our aquariums. They are tropical beauties of all colours of the rainbow, dangerous rays and turkey fish, piranhas from the South America and sharks from the Atlantic.

The collection of geological samples displays geological structure of the World ocean shores and the youngest sea – the Baltic Sea. Beauty of sea shores and singularity of coast lines is represented in the pictures made from space. The exposition ends with the lighthouse. It is equipped with a complex Fresnel lens aimed at signal injection. Watercolour paintings of lighthouses by G. Chelak, member of artists’ guild, are exhibited at the exposition.
