THE CAPTAINS’ CLUB

  Y. Savenko, Mayor,
  Honorable Captain. 2007

  Session of the captains’ club

The captains’ club initiated in 1988 by an action group of captains of fishing fleet with Vladimir Grishunov in the head, in January 1996 resumed its activity in the Museum of the World ocean. Its foundation was connected with the period of the highest development point of fishing fleet which included up to 500 ships. Then Kaliningrad Association of Sea Captains was founded and registered.

Approximately twenty years have passed since those events. During this time the branch and its fleet lost their previous significance and were catastrophically destroyed because of ill-considered reforms. The Association has also changed. Chief and senior mechanical engineers as well as the captains became its members. Nowadays they are veterans and pensioners. But they believe that their rich experience will be useful for the next generations of seamen.

Nowadays the President of the Association is Peter Chagin, captain of ocean navigation, and Honorable Citizen of Kaliningrad. And today honorable captains are in the line: they write articles and memorandums, pass their experience to young seamen and add to the museum funds with interesting items thereby preserving history. The Association unites 105 captains, chief and senior mechanical engineers. The 100th Honorable captain is Georgi Boos, governor, head of government of the Kaliningrad region.
