April is not only a middle of spring. It is a month when the Museum of the World Ocean celebrates its birthday. The Decree on establishment of the first and so far the only complex maritime museum in Russia was signed on April 12, 1990. From this moment the ship’s – the Museum of the World Ocean’s – great navigation began. Having started with the legendary Vityaz, it developed rapidly and, in 28 years, created the Historic Fleet Embankment, an onshore complex including the main museum building, a museum depository with Depth exposition, Maritime Koenigsberg-Kaliningrad and Packgaus exhibition halls and the Naval Centre. The Koenig Gate and the Friedrichsburg Gate were restored. A branch was opened in Saint Petersburg followed by one more in Svetlogorsk. The museum has been changed and grown thanks to its friends and, of course, dear visitors. Sixteen years ago, museum employees gathered, talked and decided that it is time to celebrate the birthday all together. So, that is how Herring Day was created. Over years, it changed its concept several times and significantly “grew” as well. This year, Herring Day is going to be different again. First, it has become a true gastronomic festival and going to last three days.
Second, the organizers tried their best to make such a programme that it can be interesting for everyone. So,
what should guests expect?
On Friday 13, there are no horror films but delicious fish dishes by the best restaurants and cafés in Kaliningrad; concerts, guests from Lithuania and a surprise from the museum: the main building and Maritime Koenigsberg-Kaliningrad are going to welcome guests till 9 p.m.
On Saturday (April 14), festive events are planned: a fish market, fish cuisine, rock concerts by BARRAKUDA and Ikra as well as impressive music by a saxophonist Ivan Shevtsov. A concert by the Polish band Mirror is the highlight of the programme: musicians are going to present a light and music show. Two exhibitions are going to be opened this day, too: Maritime Satyricon (Maritime Koenigsberg-Kaliningrad) and From the Sublime to the Ridiculous (Naval Centre). Moreover, there will be plenty of other events and activities: science for kids (Museum of Einstein's Fun Sciences), actor’s art school (Zapad Film motion-picture
company), street dance, a concert by AVVE Project. On Sunday (April 15), guests are welcome to concerts,
workshops and competitions.
Let’s celebrate Herring Day together!
